The theme of VCON in 2016 is “Muppets, Puppets, and Marionettes” which includes everything from giant puppets to stop motion models to Supermarionation. Expect panels and lectures on these and many other SF&F topics, plus demos, workshops, and numerous audience-participation live action games like “Human Battleship” and “Fan Feud.” A mid-sized SF&F convention run by fans for fans, we average 700 to 800 attendees.
The secondary theme is “The Small Press Cabal” which will celebrate independent Small Press Canadian Book and Magazine publishers who have created the environment for a veritable renaissance of Canadian SpecFic. Participating professionals will include publishers, editors, authors, artists and poets.

TOLKIEN POEMS DISCOVERED

TOLKIEN POEMS DISCOVERED. Two poems by J.R.R. Tolkien have been discovered in a 1936 copy of a school annual reports the BBC.

According to The Guardian —

The first poem, The Shadow Man, is an early version of a poem that Tolkien went on to publish in his 1962 collection The Adventures of Tom Bombadil. It tells of “a man who dwelt alone/ beneath the moon in shadow”, who “sat as long as lasting stone,/and yet he had no shadow”. When “a lady clad in grey” arrives, he wakes, and “clasped her fast, both flesh and bone;/and they were clad in shadow”.

However, when the overwhelming feeling of sadness and despondency persists for over two weeks, it is likely that the generic viagra india woman may also feel low as her man is suffering from ED and find effective solutions. The second, Noel, is a Christmas poem, albeit one set in scenery that would not be out of place in Middle-earth. “The hall was dark without song or light,/The fires were fallen dead,” writes Tolkien, going on to portray “the lord of snows”, whose “mantle long and pale/Upon the bitter blast was spread/And hung o’er hill and dale”.

“Noel is a beautiful and unusual take on the Christmas story, set in a wintry landscape. The focus is on Mary, which may be why Tolkien wrote the poem for the school magazine, given that we are dedicated to Our Lady. The Shadow Man is also a very beautiful story, about two people finding each other and thereafter casting only one shadow – it feels like a poem about marriage. The Shadow Man is incomplete until a woman comes to him and relieves his loneliness.”

baby-chasmosaurus-1024x494♦ Five-foot long skeleton proves to be a baby Chasmosaurus : In 2010, while looking for fossils along Alberta’s Red Deer River, paleontologists stumbled across part of a skull peeking out of the Cretaceous rock. Excavation revealed more and more bones, adding up to a nearly-complete skeleton, articulated and intact down to skin impressions on the ribs and the delicate ring of bones that were once encapsulated in the dinosaur’s eye. All cleaned up and now described by Phil Currie and colleagues, the dinosaur has turned out to be a baby Chasmosaurus – the smallest and most complete baby ceratopsid yet found.  READ MORE

♦ Tiny, delicate vessels that carried blood through a duck-billed dino-blood-vessels-151210dinosaur 80 million years ago never fossilized and still contain the beast’s tissue, a new study finds.  Researchers discovered the prize specimens on the femur (leg bone) of Brachylophosaurus canadensis, a 30-foot-long (9 meters) duck-billed dinosaur that was excavated in Montana in 2007. But it wasn’t immediately clear whether the blood vessels were made of organic matter originally from the dinosaur, or whether they had been contaminated over the years and were now made of bacteria or other components. Now, several tests show that the specimens are the original blood vessels, making them the oldest blood vessels on record to survive with their original components, the researchers said. READ MORE

Movies, Television

Why don’t they make what I want to see?

This is the title to a panel discussion scheduled for the October MonSFFA meeting.

I know it’s still a long way to October, but I saw this list of novels and short stories being made into movies & TV shows and thought it a perfect kick-off to this discussion. I seriously wonder if some of these are even possible–The Wheel of Time? Even with all the advances in medical science, I doubt I would live long enough to see the whole series.

I notice the same names cropping up over and over–Gaiman, Martin, Williams, King, for instance. They have proven track records.

I’ve read –and loved–quite a few of these novels and short stories.  Most will require an awful lot of CGI.   It was interesting to see “Spin” by Canadian Robert Charles Wilson listed as in development at SyFy.

Phrases like based on, adapted from, really worry me. I don’t usually bother to watch TV shows or movies based on books as I’m always disappointed in the results.

Anyway, take a look at this listing, and do comment on what you think you would like to see, or not see.
