Hello, Cathy,

I discovered another photo of Sylvain in Akihabara, Tokyo. The photo is attached. Here we are posing at a cutout used to promote the movie Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, which was released at that time (2007). I’m looking out of Asuka Langley Soryu (left), and Sylvain is looking out of Rei Ayanami.

Sincerely,

The first model is a 1/144 HG Bandai’s MS-05 Zaku I (Char Aznable) from the Gundam the Origin manga and OVA series. The main colors are from Testors 1/4 ounce bottles that are still available (Gloss Dark Red, Flat Grapefruit, & Flat Red). I found a different way of painting a “flame” effect on the Heat Hawk Axe using Testor’s Flat Sunflower and Gloss Tangerine. The base is Kotobukiya’s Chain Base 009. I’ve covered over most of the positioning holes with sheet plastic. The crates and containers are from Shapeways. The figures are a mixture of Wave’s 1/144 Mobile Staff & Bandai’s MS Figure 01 sets. The Zaku I markings are from Gundam Decal. The hanger deck markings are Warning placard set from TSDinc.com.

The second kit is Nitto’s 1/20 MA.K “Fireball” S.A.F.S Space Type. I had picked up some MA.K. Paints a long time ago and finally got a chance to try these out. I believe the final base colors were Spinach Green and Moon Green Grey. The female mechanic is from Hasegawa’s Maschinen Krieger Figure Set A (Mk02). I stained the wooden base, then cut a plastic sheet circle insert and scribed the checkerboard pattern to represent the concrete base.

MonSFFA PROGRAMMING

We need members to consider making a presentation or volunteer to moderate a discussion. Now that we have unlimited time on zoom, there are more possibilities. Somebody could do a demo from his/her workshop for instance. We can have debates and discussions, as we did at live meetings. Instead of just posting pictures of models, costumes, and other projects, we can have actual show-and-tells.  You can reach Sylvain by clicking here: <treasurer@monsffa.ca>

At the very least, please send us your programming wish list. What would you like to see from our club in 2021?

Post 3 of 6: The Break!

Welcome to the Break!

Get your drinks and snacks before the Zoom session which is about to begin. If you did not receive the link for Zoom, contact me NOW, because in a few minutes I will be too busy on the Zoom call and moderating comments.

And we’re off and running!

First, a couple of important messages from your executive.

We need more members to step up to the bat. You may have noticed the same names cropping up every meeting. Behind those names are some very over-worked members! Please contact Sylvain and offer your help with panel suggestions. Better yet, offer to prepare a presentation!  A presentation can be put together as slides the way Sylvain and Joe do,  or as a regular post the way Keith and I do.  We are able to assist with technical details.

The December Holiday Feast is Cancelled.

We will have a regular meeting on line on December the 12th. Please note the change of date.

Dan Kenney had been retro-fitting one of his Klingon BoP. Work is still in progress. The heavier model needed a new base,

“Compared old D-7, BOP B’rel class and my new V’Kar Super Dreadnaught class.” –DPK

I had asked members to send us pictures of their libraries. Looks like Paula needs shelving units!

And from Marc Carrier:   Salut Cathy, Quelques photos d’un partie de ma bibliothèque et de ce que je lis actuellement. A moins d’un changement je ne pense pas participer demain. A une autre fois sûrement.  –Marc

Keith wrote:  I’ve been collecting science fiction, horror, and some epic fantasy novels and anthologies since high school, mostly but not exclusively in paperback. But in addition, I’ve accumulated a sizable collection of paleoentology, history, Titanic, movie and special visual effects books, and of course, sc-fi art books, as well as general reference volumes on a variety of topics from astronomy to heraldry to steam locomotives to world’s fairs!

With my father’s passing six years ago, I inherited much of his extensive collection of World War II and general history books, and my shelving units are now stacked with books two and three rows deep! It’s all a jumble since I unpacked dad’s book boxes and added his collection to mine. I’m pretty much out of space and plan to remodel one of the soon-to-be-vacated children’s bedrooms as a library–a visit to IKEA is in my future!

The pandemic has delayed plans by both of my kids to move out on their own soon (my daughter is actually living in Ottawa currently, but a lot of her stuff is still here at home). Once they have left the nest, I’ll have space to expand and better organize my books, not to mention my equally extensive collection of sci-fi DVDs!

Sylvain needs to clean up his basement a bit to access the overflow stacks in the workshop…

Josée has made a lovely tee-shirt, Reading is Magic!

I have just finished my latest t-shirt. I have done more t-shirts in the past 5 months that in the past two years. Now I just need places to show them off.

In the feeling old department:

I saw in the comics section of the Saturday Gazette, Hi and Lois, the teenage son was comparing cleaning his room to an archeology dig. He was discovering treasures he had forgotten were there. What struck me was the comic book he was holding : the first ever copy of The X-Men. I know because I have the same comic book. You feel your age when your prized collector’s item is compared to an ancient relic.

Wayne says work on his ship is progressing very slowly. Apparently, he is having trouble finding a particular paint he needs. Meanwhile, there is Gundam.

Moebius Models 1/72 Cylon Raider (2 complete kits): The Cylon Raider is a quick weekend build. Each kit has only thirteen parts, including the stand. After assembly you just need to do a little seam filling and sanding before you are ready to paint. I used Testor’s Model Master 28003 Silver Lacquer for the base coat. I then marked off different panels and hand painted these using Citadel’s Chainmail and Boltgun Metal acrylics. The insignia took a few tries to hand paint the raised surface using Polly Scale RLM 25 Green. Cleanup of any acrylic paint was easy using a Q-tip dipped in Isopropyl Alcohol. The engine thrusters exhausts were painted using Model Master Burnt Iron. Panel lines were done using Vallejo’s Mecha Weathering Acrylic Black Wash. As a final touch, I added an M.V. Products (Model Railroad Lens) to represent the Cylon Mono-eye.

Dragon Models Iron Man 3 1/24 Mark 16 “Nightclub” Armor: Another quick build with only ten parts. Kit parts are molded in both polystyrene and vinyl and should be glued together using cyanoacrylate/super glue. The kit is designed to be a simple snap fit, with the chest and back plates (styrene) trapping the arms, legs, and head together. I needed to enlarge the pin locating holes to get these to fit together properly. I still needed to fill and sand the seams between them before painting. Since some kit parts are vinyl, acrylic paints are your best option. Since the Mark 16 “Nightclub” armor was designed as a stealth suit, it’s color scheme is shown as a metallic blue in the instructions. I’ve varied that somewhat by painting the base color using Vallejo’s Mecha Color Metallic Blue, then picking out different panels using Tamiya’s Clear Blue to break up the monotone finish. Then using Vallejo’s Mecha Weathering Black wash on the panel lines. The faceplate is Model Color Silver, with the eyes done in White. There is also a thin red line around the Arc Reactor using Tamiya Clear Red. Light panels on the armor are Vallejo Mecha Color Deep Blue. The container base is Polly Scale Zinc Chrome Primer with Vallejo Mecha Weathering Dark Rust & Black Washes. Details and scratches are done with a Silver artist pencil. The base is Model Master Flat Black.

Mojo Resin? 120mm Doc Savage Kit: I’ve had the Doc Savage kit for a very long time. I picked him up at the Chiller Theatre convention in Hasbrouck Heights during the late nineties. I would start it, get stalled, and strip the paint off. Rinse, cycle, repeat. He’s gone through at least three repaints, before I finally finished him this time. Base colors are Model Color and The Army Painter Warpaints – all acrylic. Flesh colors are a combination of Model Air Skin Tone and Model Color Sunny Skintone. The eyes are Bright Gold. The pants are Khaki, shirt is Skeleton Bone with Off white for highlights. Boots are Leather Brown. Doc’s hair/skull cap is Ochre Brown. The base is Desert Yellow with Citadel Snakebite Leather for the nameplate. The native mask is done in Model Master Acrylic Wood with details picked out in Off-White, Metallic Green eyes, and Tamiya Clear Red for the mouth. The name was painted using Game Color Bright Bronze. The palm frond was painted Golden Olive with Green Brown for the interior stalk. I used Citadel’s Seraphim Sepia for the overall wash, then dry brushed lightened colors over the entire figure. Finally softening any harsh color edges using Tamiya Weathering Master pastels. Ivory and Salmon for the skin tones. Mud for the pants and Sand for the base. Declaring Doc finally done … and now for those humming tunes from John Phillip Souza – the trailer for the 1975 George Pal film.?
Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze (1975) Official Trailer – Ron Ely, Paul Gleason

That’s it from me! Up next, a great presentation from Joe Aspler!
