I don’t know whatever possessed the Beeb to announce the new companion during an FA cup semi-final, but it is England, and one of the teams was Man United.  Man United won in overtime, which is all that mattered to some in this household.

BBC One today announced Pearl Mackie will join the Doctor Who cast as the Doctor’s new companion. Pearl was exclusively revealed to audiences on BBC One during half time of the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday 23rd August.

On joining the cast in her first major television role, Pearl said: “I’m incredibly excited to be joining the Doctor Who family. It’s such an extraordinary British institution, I couldn’t be prouder to call the TARDIS my home!

Peter Capaldi is such a brilliant actor, and his Doctor is such a wacky and wonderful character, I can’t wait to see what adventures are in store for him and Bill throughout time and space. Reading the script at the audition I thought Bill was wicked. Fantastically written, cool, strong, sharp, a little bit vulnerable with a bit of geekiness thrown in – I can’t wait to bring her to life, and to see how she develops through the series.

Hopping over to IMDB, we learn: Universal has announced that a sequel to Jurassic World will be released on Friday, June 22, 2018. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard will return to star. Jurassic World helmer Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly, who did a rewrite on World, will write the script for the sequel. Steven Spielberg will return to executive produce and Frank Marshall to produce. Trevorrow, who is not expected to return to direct, will also be an executive producer on the Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment sequel. »

♦ Back in 2009, when World Con came to Montreal, Steve Green won the Steve-GreenTAF, and came to visit.  MonSFFA was honoured to spend some time with this British fan, hosting a fun dinner at a smoked meat restaurant. So you might be interested in knowing that he and Chrissie Harper  have released the first episode of Ghostwords TV, a fortnightly vidcast devoted to horror, dark fantasy, science fiction, comics and telefantasy.

The opening installment offers a lengthy chat with author Ramsey Campbell, including a discussion of the recent controversy over the World Fantasy Award, tributes to David Hartwell and David Bowie, the TV series Ash vs Evil Dead, the latest releases from comics legend Steve Ditko, personnel changes at Doctor Who, Graham Humphreys’ new artbook.  Interesting show, I’m looking forward to more. OVMF Concert: A real trip through time and space!

Five MonSFFen took in the OVMF Dr Who concert yesterday evening. What a great show! Small wonder it sold out twice. The Dr Who001music was wonderful, sometimes loud and brash as only horns can be, but sometimes soft, sometimes whimsical as well. The conductor, Jocelyn Lebanc,  is a real Whovian, and brought his insight to the performance. Not only did he compose all the musical arrangements, but he also spent hours reviewing episodes to create a montage to show above the heads of the musicians which was perfectly synchronized to the music. . Also, new to the OVMF, the addition of a choir which lifted the music to a whole new level.

Costumes? There were Doctors, Daleks,  and various companions everywhere, and not only in the audience. Some of the musicians were also costumed, notably a clarinet  player who wore a lovely white wedding gown. Sonic screwdrivers, Tardis tuques, Keep Calm and Don’t Blink shirts, fez, bow ties, Dalek dresses, everywhere you looked. A TARDIS and a Dalek in the hall drew in the fans for photo ops. (The Dalek was mobile, but not terribly menacing. The kids loved it! )

Fern won a pair of tickets to the next show which will feature theme music from SuperHero movies, March 19.  Star Wars will be the theme for two shows in June on the 12th and 19th. Mark your calendars!

Steven Moffatt leaves the TARDIS

I have been hearing for awhile now that Steven Moffatt was leaving Dr Who. According to Radio Times, he is indeed leaving the show. Chris Chibnall who worked on Broadchurch and Torchwood is taking over. However, the bad news side of things is that there will be no Dr Who in 2016 except the Christmas special.  I hope we enjoy the OVMF concert on the 30th; unless Space does a marathon, 2016 is going to be a very lonely place for the timey-whimy fans.
