More than 600 presenters At Laval Hobby Show

Annual fundraiser for Scouts to feature miniature trains, planes and slot cars

There was the year someone brought a seven-foot-long submarine, complete with working torpedoes.

“Put it in the pool!” people yelled, so they did, and about 600 people crammed into the indoor pool at the high school to see the radiocontrolled sub prowl around. The one lifeguard on duty freaked out because there “were some crowd control issues,” organizer Didier Piette said.

“We never did that again.” Or the year someone brought their eight-foot-long, radio-controlled model jet, complete with miniature jet engine, that can propel the model plane at speeds up to 400 kilometres an hour.

“They ’re expensive,” Piette said. “Like $15,000 to $20,000. And that’s just for the engine. That doesn’t include the plane.”

They took it out to the parking lot just to hear it fire up.

“It sounds like an actual jet — it’s that loud,” Piette said. “There were like 1,000 people who came out to see it. It was on for 15 seconds — didn’t even fly.

“People are still talking about that.”

This weekend, for the 22nd year in a row, the Groupe Scouts 10e St Christophe de Laval will hold their biannual Quebec Hobby Show. It’s the largest in the province, taking up 26,000 square feet of floor space at the Georges-Vanier High School in Laval. It draws more than 600 presenters, and anywhere from 4,000 to 8,000 spectators over two days, who gawk at model train sets and try out slot-track car races or radio-controlled helicopters and dirt buggies. Multitudes of plastic models and die-cast miniature metal cars are on display.

Amateurs can get tips on anything from how to make realistic rocks on a mountain range to different ways to make a freight car look rusted out.

“I’d rather see my kids play with a model train on a piece of wood than sitting in front of a TV screen from morning to night,” said Piette, the show organizer. “When you’re pushing your thumb on a joystick, you’re not creating anything. When you’re building a house or a toy car, it’s working a lot more of your brain.”

The elites of the modelling world will be in attendance, displaying Napoleonic-era warships crafted entirely of wood, or, in the case of one Italian former navy man, a perfect likeness of the destroyer

he once served on; it took 2,000 hours to build.

Serious collectors can get in an hour early (for an extra $10) to find deals on limited edition trains or Matchbox cars — or whatever their passion is — that stores no longer stock. Locomotives that sell new for $150 can be had for as low as $80, with no tax, Piette said. They’re pre-owned, but tend to have lived a pampered existence. A large-scale model of a Union Pacific Big Boy steam engine sold for $2,700 a few years back.

Born as a novel way to raise money for scouting from parents tired of selling calendars or cookies, the fundraiser has grown from 90 display tables in 1996 to more than 600 today. Once a staple at Place Bonaventure in downtown Montreal, large-scale hobby shows were phased out in the early 1990s. Overshadowed by the video game culture and no longer the headliners in toy store displays, models and hobbies are having a harder time these days. Most of the crowd are men over 40. Items that move, like train sets and slot cars and remote-controlled vehicles, remain the crowd favourites.

Hope for resurgence comes in the number of fathers who are bringing their kids to see the Matchbox cars of their youth (which sold for 39 cents in the late 1960s and can fetch up to $300 today for one in mint condition), and the bendy orange plastic tracks kids use to race them in. Or the train sets, or slot-car race sets.

“It brings you back to your childhood — you see toys you haven’t seen in 40 years,” Piette said. “We see the father with their two young kids, and you look in his eyes and you know he’s happy because he convinced his wife to let him pay $200 on a slot-car starter kit.

“And you know it’s him who is going home to play with it.”

However, if you already are sexually aroused, you need not take the pill so early, but just 25 minutes prior to engaging in a sexual act. canada super viagra http://deeprootsmag.org/2016/09/12/bob-marovichs-gospel-picks-27/ is a form of Vardenafil that works best in boosting the sexual powers in men facing erectile problems.Online pharmacies has made a deep attempt by providing these men from the ultimate sexual satisfaction that was deprived from. A new con in Montreal for 2018

For some time now, I have heard rumours of a new con in town, but finally it seems it’s actually going to happen.  But why Thanksgiving day?

Jo Walton’s Kickstarter to launch a new Montreal convention fully funded in nine hours and since then has blown past several stretch goals. Scintillation will be held in Montreal from October 5-7, 2018, with program by Walton.

Walton set a goal of $2,366 and has already raised $4,457.

Scintillation will be a small literary focused SF convention on the weekend of Canadian Thanksgiving next year, that is the 5th to 7th October 2018. If it’s successful, we’ll carry on doing it in future years. All people of goodwill are welcome.

It’ll take place in the Holiday Inn in Chinatown in Montreal — for those who know it, that’s the one with the pagoda on the top. It’s a lovely hotel with a koi pool in the foyer and many excellent function rooms of different sizes. Montreal is a beautiful city with an excellent food culture, and a delightful place to visit. It’s easily accessible by train from New York, Ottawa, and Toronto, and it has an airport for those who prefer to fly.

And here's a closeup.
And here’s a closeup.

It is decisive to store Forzest capsule in situation that fit it. purchase cheap viagra The following points will help you increase your metabolism: Eat frequently: You should consume small portions of food rather then large cipla tadalafil 20mg amounts of nutrition. They are one of the best female libido enhancer and is available following many requests from sildenafil overnight shipping our satisfied customers to enhance the female sex drive. Though these Anesthetic agents are highly effective, sometimes viagra soft pills they can also benefit.
Scintillation will have a focus somewhat like Readercon, but much smaller, and somewhat like Fourth Street. Unlike Fourth Street it isn’t only intended for writers. There’ll be a lot for writers, but I’ll try to keep things balanced between reading and writing. My philosophy of program is to look at the available panellists and put together something that plays to their strengths and interests, and to aim to have synergy between panels. One of the best things about science fiction fandom and the conventions we hold is the way it broadens and deepens the conversation. That’s what we want to do with Scintillation. We want to keep the best things from Farthing Party — like the “Good Read” panel where four people each choose a book and the other three read them and then all four discuss them, and the “Joy of Reading” Sunday morning panel where people read great bits other people’s writing. But we’re also open to expansion and doing new things. For 2017, we’re planning to have a Sassafras concert, and we may (see stretch goals) have a readings and workshops track. We may (again, stretch goals) have gaming.

FANTASIA FESTIVAL TOP PICKS

FANTASIA FESTIVAL TOP PICKS

Action, comedy, horror — it’s all here

Chinese director Geng Jun’s Free and Easy: a gorgeous tragi-comedy.

ARIEL ESTEBAN CAYER Director of the Camera Lucida section

1. Free and Easy (July 17 at 9:45, July 20 at 5:30, Concordia’s de Sève Cinema, 1400 de Maisonneuve St. W.)

From independent Chinese filmmaker Geng Jun comes a gorgeous tragi-comedy which finds humour and absurdity in petty crime, bureaucracy and futile displays of power. Imagine a cross between early Jim Jarmusch, Jia Zhang-ke and the Coen Brothers, with the deadpan factor turned up to 12.

2. The Honor Farm (July 15 at 8 p.m. and July 17 at 3:30 p.m., de Sève Cinema)

A trippy coming-of-age tale from Texas filmmaker Karen Skloss offering a touching vision of female adolescence with just the right balance of horror, psychedelia and tartness to make the typical prom night/teen movie feel fresh again.

3. Animals (July 16 at 4:45 p.m. and July 18 at 3 p.m., de Sève)

Greg Zglinski’s story of a failing marriage is marked by a complete mastery of form — as the relationship disintegrates, so does the film’s sense of reality. A brilliant surrealism takes over, setting up a gripping central mystery: what is going on? Fans of David Lynch’s dream logic and Andrzej Zulawski’s apocalyptic passion will be delighted.

NICOLAS ARCHAMBAULT

Co-director of Asian programming

4. A Taxi Driver (Aug. 2 at 8:45 p.m., Concordia’s Alumni Auditorium, 1455 de Maisonneuve Blvd. W.)

With the legendary Song Kangho (The Host) in the title role, a director of the calibre of Jang Hoon (Secret Reunion) at the helm and an absorbing script based on tragic events little-known in the west, A Taxi Driver calls upon the cinephile and the citizen in each of us. I’m extremely proud to present such a powerful, important film to the Fantasia audience.

5. A Day (July 22 at 7:25 p.m., Alumni Auditorium)

In South Korean director Cho Sun-ho’s debut feature, a surgeon is stuck continually reliving the day his daughter died. He can never change anything, but it turns out he is not the only prisoner of this infernal time loop. An enthralling dramatic thriller, full of ingenious twists cleverly reimagining the premise of Groundhog Day.

ÉRIC BOISVERT

Director of the Action section

6. Jailbreak (July 21 at 6:45 p.m., Alumni Auditorium; July 29 at 7:30 p.m., de Sève Cinema)

Hand-to-hand combat reigns as a special police unit must stop a prison riot. Italian director Jimmy Henderson opens the door to an extremely promising potential franchise while revealing the immense cinematic talent hiding in Cambodia.

7. Savage Dog (July 15 at 7:30 p.m., Alumni Auditorium)

After spending time in a Cambodian jail where he is forced to compete in organized fights, a former IRA member (Scott Adkins of The Expendables 2) gets pulled back into the ring. Jesse V. Johnson’s ’80s-’90s throwback rewinds to a time when TV screens sweated testosterone.

8. Terminator 2: Judgment Day 3D (July 24 at 6:30 p.m., Alumni Auditorium)

Two and a half decades after revolutionizing action cinema, James Cameron presents a restored, 3D version of his classic film.

MITCH DAVIS

General director, director of international programming 9. Lowlife (July 21 at 9:25 p.m., Alumni Auditorium)

American filmmaker Ryan Prows’ debut feature is one of the most exhilarating discoveries we’ve come across in years. A thriller, crime film, comedy and deeply empathetic drama with beautifully scripted, atypical characters and shock value to spare, this one-of-a-kind blast of eccentricity will have you sweating, screaming, laughing and

crying as it surprises at virtually every turn.

10. Spoor (July 30 at 9 p.m. at D.B. Clarke Theatre, 1455 de Maisonneuve Blvd. W.; Aug. 1 at 2:45 p.m. at de Sève Cinema)

Polish cinema legend Agnieszka Holland (Europa Europa, The Secret Garden) makes her first foray into genre storytelling at nearly 70 years of age. A retired teacher struggles to defend the animals of her area against cruel-hearted hunters — who begin turning up dead with paw tracks by their bodies. A beguiling and eccentric film of paralyzing beauty and emotion that plays like a cry against fundamental disrespect for living things while also speaking to patriarchal systems of violence. Genuinely radical.

11. Mayhem (July 30 at 9:15 p.m., Alumni Auditorium).

From American director Joe Lynch (Everly) comes an absurdist, blood-soaked comedy-action-horror hand-grenade thrown in the face of cutthroat corporate culture, starring The Walking Dead’s Steven Yeun. A legal firm is under siege by its own employees, who are contaminated by a virus that temporarily renders them unable to control their impulses. A bonkers-crazy film full of gonzo wit and gore, Mayhem is also sharp, calculated and subversive to the extreme.

KING-WEI CHU

Co-director of Asian programming

12. Bastard Swordsman (July 23 at 2:45 p.m., July 29 at 3 p.m. at de Sève Cinema).

Can the infamous silkworm technique — involving web spins, lots of flying and cocoon combat — bring balance to the martial world in old China? From director Tony Liu, one of the directors who redefined martial arts cinema over 30 years ago. Get ready to be blasted with an avalanche of unfettered lunacy in this phantasmagorical, 1983 kung fu classic.

13. Bad Genius (July 16 at 4:30 p.m., D.B. Clarke; July 21 at 5:15 p.m. at de Sève Cinema).

Two super-smart students concoct elaborate schemes to help others cheat on exams. It’s Mission Impossible meets The Breakfast Club in Nattawut Poonpiriya’s exciting coming-of-age thriller, which opened the New York Asian Film Festival and aced the Thailand box office.

14. Wu Kong (July 18 at 7 p.m., Alumni Auditorium).

Award-winning director Derek Kwok (Gallants, Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons) reboots the famous Monkey King legend from the popular internet novel, with fresh vigour of epic proportions. You’ll love it for 10,000 years.

Reasonably it is highly affected in the case of spinal defects and obstruction to the flow of nerve impulses, spinal correction restores hormonal aberrations; and in case of mechanical twisting of pelvis, chiropractic buy sildenafil australia adjustments helps in anatomical restoration of deficits of the uterine cavity and fallopian tubes.
