From  R-Laurraine Tutihasi in Arizona, PurrMew86

is always an enjoyable read. First thing I look for is the critter cam pictures and of course, Mike’s astronomy shots. This issue of Purrmews has a photo of his observatory dome.

Solar Activity: Watch for Auroras!

Space Weather News for April 20, 2022
https://spaceweather.com
https://www.spaceweatheralerts.com

INTENSIFYING SOLAR ACTIVITY: The sun unleashed another X-class solar flare today, causing a deep shortwave radio blackout over southeast Asia and Australia.  Intensifying solar activity has resulted in more than 19 flares during the past 24 hours alone. Even farside sunspots are getting in on the act. Full story @ Spaceweather.com.

Don’t miss another solar flare: Subscribers to our Space Weather Alert Service received a text message about today’s X-flare while it was happening.

NAKED-EYE SUNSPOTS: Yesterday in Poland, a flock of cranes flew across the setting sun. Among them were sunspots. “Active sunspot complex AR2993-94 is so big that it was easily visible to the naked eye,” says Marek Nikodem, who photographed the flyby:

It’s true. The primary dark cores of AR2993-94 are twice as wide as Earth. Technically, this makes them “naked-eye” objects. Be careful, though. Looking at the sun can damage your eyes. Safe solar filters are strongly recommended.

Earth itself provided the filter for Nikodem’s photo. Low-hanging clouds and haze dimmed the sun enough for photography. Just to be on the safe side, though, he pointed his camera using the electronic viewscreen–not the optical viewfinder.

Brian had prepared an elaborate slide show for our meeting on the 9th, but because of the copyright restrictions on YouTube we were unable to post his Zoom presentation. There are a lot of anime fans in our membership, so he was asked to send us his slides. Hopefully, if the technology co-operates, you will be able to load the film clips from the slides yourself.

If you have Powerpoint, you can download the slide show to your computer by clicking here: 10 Favorite Anime

Fossils of dinos killed by asteroid

Scientists have presented a stunningly preserved leg of a dinosaur.

The limb, complete with skin, is just one of a series of remarkable finds emerging from the Tanis fossil site in the US State of North Dakota.

But it’s not just their exquisite condition that’s turning heads – it’s what these ancient specimens are purported to represent.

The claim is the Tanis creatures were killed and entombed on the actual day a giant asteroid struck Earth.
