Scintillation reviews

On the weekend of Thanksgiving, Jo Walton hosted the Scintillation convention in Montreal.

The 150 membership cap was reached long before the convention, as Jo used a Kickstarter campaign to ensure enough funds to cover the costs. A brilliant idea!

There are reviews of the con HERE.

It sounds like everyone had a good time;  I wish I could have attended, but Thanksgiving is family-at-the-cottage weekend.  It will be on Thanksgiving again next year, but probably the following weekend in 2020.

A sequel is assured for 2019, and a website is just launched. Really nice logo! Take a look!

A new con in Montreal for 2018

For some time now, I have heard rumours of a new con in town, but finally it seems it’s actually going to happen.  But why Thanksgiving day?

Jo Walton’s Kickstarter to launch a new Montreal convention fully funded in nine hours and since then has blown past several stretch goals. Scintillation will be held in Montreal from October 5-7, 2018, with program by Walton.

Walton set a goal of $2,366 and has already raised $4,457.

Scintillation will be a small literary focused SF convention on the weekend of Canadian Thanksgiving next year, that is the 5th to 7th October 2018. If it’s successful, we’ll carry on doing it in future years. All people of goodwill are welcome.

It’ll take place in the Holiday Inn in Chinatown in Montreal — for those who know it, that’s the one with the pagoda on the top. It’s a lovely hotel with a koi pool in the foyer and many excellent function rooms of different sizes. Montreal is a beautiful city with an excellent food culture, and a delightful place to visit. It’s easily accessible by train from New York, Ottawa, and Toronto, and it has an airport for those who prefer to fly.

Scintillation will have a focus somewhat like Readercon, but much smaller, and somewhat like Fourth Street. Unlike Fourth Street it isn’t only intended for writers. There’ll be a lot for writers, but I’ll try to keep things balanced between reading and writing. My philosophy of program is to look at the available panellists and put together something that plays to their strengths and interests, and to aim to have synergy between panels. One of the best things about science fiction fandom and the conventions we hold is the way it broadens and deepens the conversation. That’s what we want to do with Scintillation. We want to keep the best things from Farthing Party — like the “Good Read” panel where four people each choose a book and the other three read them and then all four discuss them, and the “Joy of Reading” Sunday morning panel where people read great bits other people’s writing. But we’re also open to expansion and doing new things. For 2017, we’re planning to have a Sassafras concert, and we may (see stretch goals) have a readings and workshops track. We may (again, stretch goals) have gaming.
