NOVEMBER 23 MonSFFA MEETING; Post 1 of 2, 12:30PM – Introduction and Agenda

1) INTRODUCTION

Welcome to MonSFFA’s November 2024 meeting! This will be our last regular club meeting of the year. In early December, we’ll be hosting our traditional Christmas/Holiday Dinner Party—we return to a downtown restaurant this year! The dinner will wrap up our activities for 2024!

Today’s proceedings will be getting underway shortly. We are meeting live and in person at our meeting room in Le Nouvel Hotel, downtown! For those joining us online, today, see the instructions, below (at the end of this post), to join in and participate on ZOOM.

Our programming agenda begins at 1:00PM; the meeting will conclude at 5:00PM. This opening post has gone up 30 minutes before the meeting’s start time to allow folk to gather online at their leisure.

A closing post will go up at 5:00PM to officially thank today’s presenters/discussion moderators, and to publish the date of the next MonSFFA event, our Christmas and Holiday Dinner Party.

2) MEETING THEME FOR NOVEMBER

We’ll be tapping the membership for suggestions and ideas as to next year’s meeting programming. So, members are encouraged to come to the meeting with a few ideas as to SF&F topics they’d like us to explore in 2025! Your input is welcome and valued!

Today’s programming agenda is as follows:

1:00PMReport on the Return of the Super Sci-Fi Book Sale

3:00PMBreak

Raffle, announcements, brief discussion of club business.

3:15PMMeeting Programming for 2025

We brainstorm ideas for next year’s meeting programming! Your suggestions as to topics for our discussions, presentations, and workshops are most welcome! Let us know what you’d like to see at a MonSFFA meeting in 2025!

4:45PMWrap-Up, Clean-Up!

We close another year of MonSFFA meetings while looking forward to our Christmas celebrations in December, and then, the New Year!

Please Note: While we strive to keep on schedule, we do, sometimes, fall behind a little, or find ourselves having to reshuffle the order of items on the agenda for one reason or another, or reschedule planned presentations/discussions. Therefore, please understand that all programming is subject to change!

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT!

Greetings fellow sci-fi fans!
As the final paperwork on our recent Super Sci-Fi Book Sale is completed, I wanted to take a moment to express my personal gratitude, as well as that of the club, to all MonSFFA members, and friends of the club, who answered the call and volunteered to help with the sale. On the eve of the event Friday night, on the Saturday morning of the sale, and late-afternoon/evening, post sale, folk stepped up to help us unload and cart boxes of books, set-up our sales tables, and then pack it all up at day’s end. This is a monumental task, and we greatly appreciate your efforts on behalf of MonSFFA; our book sale simply could not happen without the help of volunteers, so again, thank you!
We are also very appreciative of the many donations of books—in some cases whole carloads!—that we received. So a “Thank You” is in order, as well, to all who donated to the cause. This annual book sale is a major fund-raising event for our club; know that all proceeds are directed to MonSFFA’s operating budget.
Our treasurer will report on the sale during the upcoming November 23rd regular club meeting, but I can tell you that this 2024 installment of the Super Sci-Fi Book Sale was quite well attended and added north of $800 to the club’s coffers. It had been some five years since we had held the sale, the yearly event having been scuttled during the pandemic and post-pandemic period, and frankly, we were unsure of the number of people who might return after such a prolonged hiatus, given lingering post-pandemic anxieties. We were very pleased to see a good turnout, resulting in one of our more lucrative results! So, a final thank you is proffered to all who attended and availed themselves of the fantastic bargains we had on offer!
Happy reading, everyone, and we’ll see you at next year’s Super Sci-Fi Book Sale!
Follow the club at www.MonSFFA.ca, and drop in to one of our regular meetings to see what we’re all about!
Keith Braithwaite, President, MonSFFA
