The mysterious upcoming\u00a0Star Trek<\/em> series bringing back fan favorite Jean-Luc Picard<\/a> (Patrick Stewart) is going to be very different in tone from previous shows in the franchise, and below, executive producer Alex Kurtzman explains exactly how.<\/p>\n

The writer-producer has worked on J.J. Abrams\u2019\u00a0Star Trek<\/em> films and is the current showrunner of CBS All-Access\u2019\u00a0Star Trek: Discovery<\/em>, as well as an executive producer on the Picard series. We asked Kurtzman how the spin-off will compare to Discovery<\/em> and Stewart\u2019s previous Star Trek<\/em> series,\u00a0The Next Generation<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s an extremely different rhythm than Discovery<\/em>,\u201d Kurtzman told EW exclusively. \u201cDiscovery<\/em> is a bullet. Picard<\/em> is a very contemplative show. It will find a balance between the speed of Discovery<\/em> and the nature of what Next Gen<\/em> was, but I believe it will have its own rhythm.\u201d<\/p>\n

Continued Kurtzman: \u201cWithout revealing too much about it, people have so many questions about Picard and what happened to him, and the idea we get to take time to answer those questions in the wake of the many, many things he\u2019s had to deal with in Next Gen<\/em> is really exciting. \u2018More grounded\u2019 is not the right way to put it, because season 2 of Discovery<\/em> is also grounded. It will feel more\u2026 real-world? If that\u2019s the right way to put it.\u201d<\/p>\n

So there you have it, the words that come to mind when asked to describe the Picard show are things like \u201creal-world, contemplative, grounded.\u201d (And, yes Kurtzman used \u201cPicard\u201d as if that\u2019s the show\u2019s title, but there is no official title yet, and it\u2019s pretty hard to imagine the actual title won\u2019t have \u201cStar Trek\u201d in it.)<\/p>\n

Only Stewart has been cast in the spin-off so far, Kurtzman added. \u201cThe writers\u2019 room has broken about eight episodes and we\u2019re moving quickly, and I couldn\u2019t be more excited about it,\u201d he noted. There\u2019s no premiere date announced as of yet.<\/p>\n

In the meantime, we have season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery<\/em><\/a> coming Jan. 17.\u00a0Kurtzman took over the captain\u2019s chair on the series last June. Now that the\u00a0Discovery<\/em> story has moved beyond the Klingon war, the show is taking on a bit of a lighter tone, and has added Anson Mount (as Captain Pike) and Ethan Peck (as Mr. Spock) to the cast, which is led by Sonequa Martin-Green (Michael Burnham).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
