The lab will be located at Microsoft\u2019s Redmond HQ, and will include a team of more than 100 scientists working on AI, from areas including natural language processing, learning and perception systems.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2017\/07\/12\/microsoft-creates-an-ai-research-lab-to-challenge-google-and-deepmind\/\"><strong>READ MORE<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"copy-snippet fontset1 scale3\">\n<article class=\"art\">\n<header>\n<hgroup>\n<h6 data-bind=\"text: articleTitle\">3 \u00a0 FANTASIA: Filmmaker Jung\u2019s twist on Nikita<\/h6>\n<\/hgroup>\n<ul class=\"art-byline\">\n<li class=\"art-author\" data-bind=\"text: byline\">Montreal Gazette <time data-bind=\"text: shortDateString\">13 Jul 2017 <\/time>T\u2019CHA DUNLEVY<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/header>\n<figure class=\"art-pic\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"articleImage\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn2-img.pressreader.com\/pressdisplay\/docserver\/getimage.aspx?regionKey=Y3Hc9cqTkQLYVHaOh%2bT2QQ%3d%3d\" data-bind=\"attr: { src: imageUrl }\" \/><em data-bind=\"text: imageByline\">FANTASIA<\/em><figcaption><span data-bind=\"text: imageText\">Kim Ok-bin stars in The Villainess, an action-packed thriller that opens the Fantasia International Film Festival Thursday evening at Concordia\u2019s Alumni Auditorium.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div data-bind=\"foreach: articleBlocks\">\n<p data-bind=\"text: $data\">Jung Byung-gil wastes zero time with niceties in his wham-bam action flick The Villainess, which had a midnight screening at the Cannes Film Festival, closed the New York Asian Film Festival and opens Montreal\u2019s Fantasia International Film Festival on Thursday evening.<\/p>\n<p data-bind=\"text: $data\">Therein, the South Korean director drops viewers into the thick of it: a black-clad individual enters an ominous industrial building in the middle of the night and begins killing everyone in sight.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p data-bind=\"text: $data\">The catch? The camera shows everything from the assailant\u2019s point of view. So as they walk down hallways, shooting at dozens of weapon-wielding gangsters \u2014 stopping only to re-load, with handgun and ammo held out for us to see \u2014 we are right there with them.<\/p>\n<p data-bind=\"text: $data\">Midway through the onslaught, just when you think it\u2019s over, the camera pulls out to reveal this vicious killer to be a cherub-cheeked young woman, albeit with a massive chip on her diminutive shoulder. Then the onslaught continues \u2014 this time with the camera swirling around as the knives come out and she engages in hand-to-hand combat.<\/p>\n<p data-bind=\"text: $data\">Freshly dazed from a Monday morning screening of the film, I met Jung at Fantasia\u2019s Concordia headquarters. He is in town for the week leading up to his film\u2019s festival screening and was enjoying our city. He had taken in Cirque du Soleil\u2019s new show, Volta, he informed me through an interpreter.<\/p>\n<p data-bind=\"text: $data\">It was hard to find out much more about what he had been up to, or to get too deep into The Villainess, as the three-way conversation often left me feeling like Bill Murray in Sofia Coppola\u2019s Lost In Translation \u2014 quizzically observing the back and forth between my subject and his interpreter, only to receive snippets of their conversation.<\/p>\n<p data-bind=\"text: $data\">What I did learn, which is obvious upon viewing the film, is that Jung was inspired by Luc Besson\u2019s 1990 female killing machine classic, Nikita, about a convicted felon who is given a new identity and trained as a police assassin.<\/p>\n<p data-bind=\"text: $data\">In The Villainess, following her wildly entertaining killing spree (which will have famously vocal Fantasia fans cheering like there\u2019s no tomorrow), Sook-hee (Kim Ok-bin, who starred in Park Chan-wook\u2019s Thirst) is taken into police custody and offered a deal<\/p>\n<p data-bind=\"text: $data\">wherein she works for the government for 10 years, after which she and her newborn daughter will be free.<\/p>\n<p data-bind=\"text: $data\">Jung saw Nikita when he was 1<\/p>\n<p data-bind=\"text: $data\">0 years old, he explained, and it stuck with him.<\/p>\n<p data-bind=\"text: $data\">\u201cSince I was young, my dream was to make a film about a woman, with a lot of action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-bind=\"text: $data\">Comparisons to Quentin Tarantino\u2019s Kill Bill, while equally appropriate, don\u2019t ring as true with the director.<\/p>\n<p data-bind=\"text: $data\">\u201cI really like that film,\u201d he said, \u201cb<\/p>\n<p data-bind=\"text: $data\">ut the action is completely different than in my film. I was more influenced by Nikita.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-bind=\"text: $data\">The difference, he noted, comes down to how the violence is shot.<\/p>\n<p data-bind=\"text: $data\">\u201cIn Kill Bill, it\u2019s one action, one cut,\u201d he said, referring to Tarantino\u2019s editing-heavy visual style. \u201cI like to show all the action in one shot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-bind=\"text: $data\">While there are edits in Jung\u2019s opening barrage, they are hidden, he explained, so it feels like we are watching one continuous event.<\/p>\n<p data-bind=\"text: $data\">The proof is in the pudding. While the fight scenes in Kill Bill are a blast, Jung\u2019s pack a more visceral punch, so to speak. The ante is upped by the way the sequence is filmed. The director and his team developed a special camera which was placed on the stunt performer\u2019s head, putting viewers front and centre for each and every exchange.<\/p>\n<p data-bind=\"text: $data\">After the initial mayhem, and ano<\/p>\n<p data-bind=\"text: $data\">ther round of bloodletting when Sook-hee is imprisoned, things settle down as Jung and co-writer Jung Byeong-sik establish The Villainess\u2019s elaborate, dramatic premise.<\/p>\n<p data-bind=\"text: $data\">Sook-hee and her daughter are eventually resettled, we learn about her tumultuous past \u2014 her father was murdered, then her husband was murdered, explaining her desire for revenge \u2014 and our heroine gets a taste of a normal life, complete with a new love interest. But they keep pulling her back in.<\/p>\n<p data-bind=\"text: $data\">A mid-film motorcycle chase-turned-sword fight (shot without computer graphics, Jung insisted) revives the adrenalin, as does a climactic battle on a bus. Each time, the director shows breathtaking ambition and ingenuity.<\/p>\n<p data-bind=\"text: $data\">When asked what was next on the agenda, Jung said he recently met with a Hollywood agent concerning the possibility of an English-language production.<\/p>\n<p data-bind=\"text: $data\">\u201cHe came to Korea and looked at the conditions there. We discussed possibilities. I liked what he was offering.
