He had created the monster suit for Edward L. Corman had approached him to create the giant crustaceans of <em>Attack of the Crab Monsters<\/em>, but Paul, who was better getting to know the pitfalls of low-budget, independent filmmaking, had assessed the special effects budget as inadequate and turned Corman down. He felt that a sufficiently realistic giant crab could not be satisfactorily realized for the money that was on the table.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/03.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-22768\" src=\"http:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/03-671x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"723\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/03-671x1024.jpg 671w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/03-197x300.jpg 197w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/03-768x1172.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/03-1007x1536.jpg 1007w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/03-1342x2048.jpg 1342w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/03.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>He did, however, sign on to a second Corman project that year, <em>Not of This Earth<\/em>, acquainted as he was with cast members Paul Birch and Beverly Garland.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/04.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-22769\" src=\"http:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/04-1024x805.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"373\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/04-1024x805.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/04-300x236.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/04-768x604.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/04.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For this project, he fashioned a flying umbrella creature for a scene that sees the eerie thing dispatch a cast member. <em>Not of This Earth<\/em> introduced on screen an old SF concept, that of matter transmission across space, later popularized on television\u2019s <em>Star Trek<\/em>.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/06.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-22770\" src=\"http:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/06-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"356\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/06-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/06-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/06-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/06.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>American International Pictures had entered into an arrangement with a British distributor whereby American actors and scriptwriters were loaned out to the overseas producer in exchange for a share of the resulting films. AIP got to distribute the movies in North America, and the British company got to feature American actors, which helped to successfully market a film in the U.S.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/07-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-22771\" src=\"http:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/07-521x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"932\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/07-521x1024.jpg 521w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/07-153x300.jpg 153w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/07-768x1509.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/07-782x1536.jpg 782w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/07-1042x2048.jpg 1042w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/07-scaled.jpg 1303w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Cat Girl<\/em>, similar thematically to Val Lewton\u2019s better-known <em>Cat People<\/em>, was the first such co-production. But AIP\u2019s James Nicholson was unhappy with the film as delivered; he felt there was too much ambiguity as to the lead character\u2014was she cat or girl, <em>actually<\/em> a were-leopard, or simply a mentally unbalanced and delusional woman? Audiences would want to see a transformation scene, he argued, and Blaisdell was asked to come up with a cat suit over the span of a weekend as the filming of insert shots was scheduled for Monday morning! Blaisdell dutifully delivered, but the fleeting inserts were hastily filmed and did little to satisfy Nicholson\u2019s concerns, in my view.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/08.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-22772\" src=\"http:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/08-1024x831.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"385\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/08-1024x831.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/08-300x244.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/08-768x624.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/08.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/12.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-22775\" src=\"http:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/12-1024x799.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"370\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/12-1024x799.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/12-300x234.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/12-768x600.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/12.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As Blaisdell\u2019s solid reputation grew within the low-budget filmmaking community, greater in demand became his services. Al Zimbalist approached Paul about a project called <em>Monster From Green Hell<\/em>, involving radiation-mutated wasps that grow to enormous size. Paul produced some preliminary pen-and-ink sketches for the producer and was ready to negotiate a price for a full-sized wasp monster but never heard anything further! Ultimately, Zimbalist chose to use stop-motion puppets for his monsters, leaving Paul unceremoniously hanging. Blaisdell was never paid for his sketches.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/19.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-22779\" src=\"http:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/19-660x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"735\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/19-660x1024.jpg 660w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/19-193x300.jpg 193w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/19-768x1192.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/19-989x1536.jpg 989w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/19-1319x2048.jpg 1319w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/19.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Milner Brothers, Jack and Dan, sought Paul\u2019s input on their occult\/horror production, <em>From Hell it Came<\/em>. Blaisdell produced a number of beautiful colour sketches of his design for the script\u2019s required tree monster. Again, crickets. The producer-brothers had contracted Halloween mask manufacturer Don Post Studios to create the tree monster suit, without Paul\u2019s knowledge or involvement. Five individually-crafted costumes were fabricated, one of these the finely detailed \u201chero\u201d costume, so-called, used for close-ups. Little-people actors portrayed the saucer men.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/27.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-22785\" src=\"http:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/27-902x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"538\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/27-902x1024.jpg 902w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/27-264x300.jpg 264w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/27-768x872.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/27-1353x1536.jpg 1353w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/27.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Paul sculpted a master alien head in plaster over chicken wire, from which he fabricated fiberglass and latex headpieces. He employed Styrofoam balls as eyes, and ran liquid rubber through a cake decorator to create the protruding veins visible on the aliens\u2019 bulbous craniums. His presence on set was challenged on one occasion by an assistant producer who didn\u2019t know who he was. Paul had showed up with a prosthetic he had made for shots in which only the creature\u2019s arm would be visible. He was told to just leave it, and to get off the set, further embittering him with regard to the industry.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/73.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-22818\" src=\"http:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/73-675x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"719\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/73-675x1024.jpg 675w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/73-198x300.jpg 198w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/73-768x1166.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/73-1012x1536.jpg 1012w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/73-1349x2048.jpg 1349w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/73.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Paul\u2019s final film was released in 1959. <em>The Ghost of Dragstrip Hollow<\/em> was a poorly executed send-up of AIP\u2019s monster and teenaged hot-rodder movies. Paul, in his old <em>Day the World Ended<\/em> costume, essentially played himself, affecting a squeaky voice when, at a costume party, he is discovered to be a phony \u201cmonster\u201d inhabiting the supposedly haunted mansion used by the teens as their new club house.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/76.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-22821\" src=\"http:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/76-1024x807.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"374\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/76-1024x807.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/76-300x236.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/76-768x605.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/76.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While he continued for a couple more years to submit designs for various projects, none ever came to fruition. The science fiction\/horror boom of the 1950s had waned, giving way to teen-oriented movies about motorcycle gangs, juvenile delinquents, hotrod racing and, ultimately and most successfully for AIP, the beach party and surfing films of the 1960s.<\/p>\n<p>After a failed venture publishing, with his friend, Bob Burns, a magazine about movie monsters and the crafting of same, he left the entertainment business altogether, earning his living instead as a carpenter.<\/p>\n<p>He died of stomach cancer in 1983 at the age of 55, just as interest in the monster films of his era, and of his own contributions to the genre, began to rekindle. His devoted wife, Jackie, lived the lonely life of a recluse in their deteriorating Topanga Canyon house until her death in 2006.<\/p>\n<p>Paul Blaisdell achieved much with very little over his brief film-industry career. His best monsters compare favourably to big-studio backed contemporaries like the Creature from the Black Lagoon and the Metalunan Mutant.
