A few excessively nervous, or maybe remarkably prescient souls suspect the virus is likely experiencing another summertime lull, and may well return to vex us come fall and winter, if past experience is any guide.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s hope not!<\/p>\n<p>In any case, most Canadians are fully vaxxed and thus should be able to weather any returning storm. There are many; here are but a few:<\/p>\n<p><em>Le Monde Tel Qu\u2019il Sera <\/em>(1846), by Emile Souvestre, imagines a dystopian, year-3000 future and a steam locomotive that journeys through time and space. Similarly, Michael Coney\u2019s <em>The Celestial Steam Locomotive <\/em>(1983) features a time- and dimension-jumping train, while the manga and subsequent anim\u00e9 <em>Galaxy Express 999<\/em> showcases a space-faring train that travels from the Milky Way to the Andromeda Galaxy.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/GalaxyExpress999.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-22727\" src=\"http:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/GalaxyExpress999-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"711\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/GalaxyExpress999-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/GalaxyExpress999-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/GalaxyExpress999-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/GalaxyExpress999-1024x1536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/GalaxyExpress999-1365x2048.jpg 1365w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/GalaxyExpress999.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Titanic<\/em> victim John Jacob Astor IV\u2019s\u00a0<em>A Journey in Other Worlds: A Romance of the Future<\/em>\u00a0(1894), meanwhile, correctly predicted trains propelled by magnetic levitation by the year 2000!<\/p>\n<p>Hugo Gernsback\u2019s novel <em>Ralph 124C 41<strong>+<\/strong><\/em> (1911) was the genre\u2019s first major work to feature trains, notably a subterranean maglev express between North America and Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Both Christopher Priest\u2019s <em>The Inverted World<\/em> (1974) and China Mi\u00e9ville\u2019s <em>Iron Council<\/em> (2004) feature societies on rails, with the need of constantly pulling up behind and re-laying track ahead of the trains upon which are built cities.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/HogwartsExpress.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-22729\" src=\"http:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/HogwartsExpress-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"356\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/HogwartsExpress-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/HogwartsExpress-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/HogwartsExpress-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/HogwartsExpress.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the best-known genre train of recent years is the Hogwarts Express, transportation for students of the famous school of witchcraft and wizardry in the Harry Potter books and films. Another is the Snowpiercer, continually circling the globe with the remnants of humanity aboard in the wake of a failed attempt at climate engineering which has resulted in a snow- and icebound Earth.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Snowpiercer.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-22732\" src=\"http:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Snowpiercer-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"356\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Snowpiercer-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Snowpiercer-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Snowpiercer-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.monsffa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Snowpiercer.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Spy-fi fans of the late-1960s tuned in weekly to the James Bond-like adventures of Secret Service agents Jim West and Artemus Gordon, who travelled the <em>Wild Wild West<\/em> aboard the <em>Wanderer<\/em>, their specially equipped train.
