Earth’s inner core may be filled with a weird substance that is neither solid nor liquid, according to a new study.<\/p>\n

For more than half a century, scientists believed that\u00a0Earth<\/a>‘s\u00a0deepest recesses consist of a molten outer core surrounding a densely compressed ball of solid\u00a0iron<\/a>\u00a0alloy. But new research, published Feb. 9 in the journal\u00a0Nature<\/a>, offers a rare insight into the inner structure of the planet \u2014 and it’s far weirder than previously thought.<\/p>\n
