For a long time after their discovery in 1877, scientists assumed Mars\u2019 two puny moons \u2014 Deimos and Phobos \u2014 were captured asteroids. This belief persisted until evidence revealed both moons formed at the same time as the Red Planet itself, and that the smaller one, Deimos, has a mysteriously tilted orbit. However, it wasn\u2019t until 2017 that researchers put forth a new idea<\/a> that could explain why Deimos’<\/a> orbit is slanted by 2 degrees.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fact that Deimos\u2019 orbit is not exactly in plane with Mars\u2019 equator was considered unimportant,\u201d said SETI Institute research scientist and lead author Matija \u0106uk in a press release<\/a>. \u201cBut once we had a big new idea and we looked at it with new eyes, Deimos\u2019 orbital tilt revealed a big secret.\u201d<\/p>\n
